Advantages Of Using A Duck Hunting Boat

December 3, 2007

Many hunters would agree that their most valuable piece of equipment for duck hunting is their boat. There are a variety of types on the market and all are slightly different. Since hunting duck is best done where the ducks are, that is on ponds, rivers, streams and lakes, many hunters use a Jon boat, duck-boat, or even rowboats to get them where the need to be.

When using your boat safety needs to be the number one priority; a couple of men, guns, a dog on the boat, coupled with the adrenaline rush accompanied with the hunt, can equal a very dangerous situation when on the water. While boating deaths have declined in recent years due to suggested and mandatory education programs, the numbers need to continue to decrease. Hunters need to observe the laws and regulations in the area, and take advantage of new programs to ensure the utmost safety when on the water duck hunting.

Many of the boats used for duck hunting, such as the Jon or duck boats, don’t have the lateral stability needed for security on the water. These boats are often easier to broach or swamp just from weight shifts within the boat. Another element for the hunter to be aware of is changes in the weather; he should always be watching the forecast and know what could happen when he’s out there. Many of the fancier boats available come with a radio and having it tuned to the local weather station isn’t a bad idea in unpredictable conditions.

Another element that a hunter can control is other hunters in the boat. More than one man, and more than one gun can be a very bad recipe, so be sure each hunter knows the other hunter’s fields of fire. Also be careful of too much movement or dogs jumping out of the boat.

A popular boat among duck hunters is the Jon boat. It has a flat-bottom design and is usually made of wood or aluminum and is better able to withstand poor weather conditions. Some features include formed-in, rounded keels, superior cast lifting handles, coined and extruded ribs, and a durable paint finish. There are also many extras the hunter can choose from, including, a pedestal seat, dual console, center seat, vinyl heavy-duty floor covering, and even a radio and CD player. Returning home accident-free is the best way to enjoy your duck hunt.
