Police Career - Linux Computer Systems in Law Enforcement

December 3, 2007

Law enforcement recently has been following the general tide of government and public service groundswell by seeking computing solutions in the Linux direction. Particularly in law enforcement, their needs match well with open source software. They have to work lean on a taxpayer’s budget, and open source is free or low cost. They need top security, and Linux is still the highest-scoring operating software in official government assessments. They need mission-critical reliability, and Linux is so stable, it doesn′t just outrank the competition in stability - it makes the competition disappear! Some recent examples of law enforcement agencies... Read more »

What Every Prep Chef Should Know About Cutlery

December 3, 2007

Ah, the prep chef, happily whacking away with a steady rhythm. You have no worries about how the Hollandaise sauce is going to turn out, nor how fussy those customers at table seven are. All you have to worry about is making food the right consistency before passing it off to someone else. You can go through the day in an almost Zen-like calm, just tending to the little stuff. The best restaurants will either let you pick your utensils, or have a good selection already handed down from previous prep chefs. If you’re picking out your own, you may be tempted to call that 1-800 number and just get a set of everything (with the bonus turnip twaddler) and be done with it, or you might take your career... Read more »

A Writing Career: Newspaper Vs Magazine Work

December 3, 2007

I completely agree with you that thoughtful feature writing can be more challenging than the classic hard news stories. I don′t think that your preferences necessarily make you more suited for magazine work than for newspaper work, but I do think that you should consider pursuing a feature writing career rather than a hard news career. Whatever you pursue, the good thing about hard news and features for both papers and magazines is that you can use your creative writing skills for virtually any story. A “featurey” lead is all the rage anyway. I wish I had more concrete advice for you, but perhaps these comments can... Read more »

Police Career - How to Keep Police Stress Syndrome From Taking Over Your Life

December 3, 2007

The law enforcement profession is legendary for its high stress. It is repeatedly in the top ten of most stressful jobs. And there’s nothing like police work to make a candidate for ‘bringing your work home with you’, because you naturally encounter things on the job that take some processing in the off hours to deal with. The first tip is to lose the macho exterior. As John Wayne said, courage isn’t not being scared. Courage is being scared as heck - and saddling up anyway. Acknowledge that you have picked a tough job to do, and that you’re only too human. Expecting huge reserves of guts from yourself, going around denying it by saying, “It doesn’t... Read more »

Journalist Magazine Or Reporter

December 3, 2007

I can’t speak for the magazine business, but as a former newspaperman, I can tell you how newspapers gather information. The first thing a new reporter does on a beat is introduce himself to all the principle people on that beat. For example a reporter covering a federal courthouse would introduce himself to the chief judge in the district and to the US Attorney for the district, also to the clerk of the courts and the head of the US Marshal Service in that courthouse. In short, find out who the movers and decision makers are and make yourself known to them. If I were covering the fashion world for a fashion magazine, I would first... Read more »
