Why Is Mother’s Day Only Once A Year?

December 6, 2007

Am I the only mother who wonders why Mother’s Day is just once a year? The day a woman brings a child into the world she becomes a mother and she’s a mother for the rest of her life. The way I look at it, children who have been given the gift of life should find ways to thank their mothers every day. Unfortunately, the other members of my family don’t see it this way - yet. I’ve waited for this day for three hundred sixty-four days. If I waited for my family to bring me... Read more »

What’s An Emotional Massage?

December 6, 2007

Having a view of the ocean is like having an emotional massage. Although modesty required covering the view at night, I didn’t want coverings that would block the view during the day. Now, at the push of a button, shades come down; and at the push of a button, they disappear into the ceiling. At first this wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Because both the window wall in the living room and the one in the master bedroom are in three sections, the shades are in three sections. While I was... Read more »

Is It The 21st Century Version Of “The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers”?

December 6, 2007

Where did all the people go? When I go up and down the supermarket aisles, I see pictures of Paul Newman and Wolfgang Puck on almost everything. I’ve come to the conclusion both these men are missing and soon their pictures will be on milk cartons. Supermarket cashiers are missing too. They’ve been replaced by self-checkout lanes. I’m supposed to scan the prices, weigh the produce and bag my purchases. Whom am I meant to blame for the flattened bread and crushed strawberries?... Read more »

Are You Off-Track?

December 6, 2007

Frankly, I never thought I’d have this particular train of thought; but to avoid a long drive home in rush-hour traffic, my husband and I decided to travel by train to visit friends. I heard there were first class cars. I’m not sure because John bought coach tickets. I wish he’d by Coach when I wanted a new purse. Coach travel on a train is like traveling on Southwest Airlines - open seating. The good news is there were plenty of open seats. Of course, that’s bad news for... Read more »

How Natural Is The Natural Look?

December 6, 2007

There I was, walking through the department store when an attractive man in a white lab coat and brightly striped tie asked if I’d like a new look. Being morning challenged, I unintentionally have a new look every day. However, he was offering a professional new look - a free, professional, new look. My answer, of course, was yes; and fifteen minutes later there was a new me. That’s less time than it takes me to wipe the shower steam off the bathroom mirror and decide hair scrunching... Read more »

Why Is There No Time Like The Present?

December 6, 2007

The trouble with Type A personalities is they’re always trying to be A+. I know. I am one. Our motto is “There’s no time like the present”. Being A’s, however, doesn’t mean we’re perfectionists. We know perfection is impossible. We just want everything to be right all the time. Type A’s are described as overachievers, who are competitive, exacting and driven. Some A’s have trouble expressing their feelings - obviously, not me. I’ve often... Read more »

Runners And Their Running Shoes

December 6, 2007

Runners get benefits from many different areas, the first is cardiovascular, the second is they are getting aerobic exercise and third is they are increasing endurance. Running shoes are manufactured for specific activity. When shopping for running shoes you should not look at the fancy designs but the functionality... Read more »

Is Progress Our Most Important Product?

December 6, 2007

Okay. I admit it. I’m electronically challenged. I have trouble using an electric can opener, an electric pencil sharpener - even an electric toothbrush. My husband, on the other hand - the hand holding a fistful of extension cords - loves electronic gadgets. It’s a guy thing, which I’m sure Freud would have said related somehow to a man’s relationship with his penis. Anyway…when John brought home an answering machine, I was intimidated by its buttons and flashing... Read more »

Have You Played Suburban Slot Machines?

December 6, 2007

Ask people what they do when they go to Las Vegas and they’ll say they play slot machines. I play slot machines too, but not only in Las Vegas. There are legal slot machines where I live. Because all free parking spaces seem to be taken by fire hydrants, I learned how to play suburban slot machines, also known as parking meters. I remember when the library parking meters took pennies. No more. In fact, some parking meters don’t take nickels anymore. The day is coming when they’ll... Read more »

Who Put M And E In Computer?

December 6, 2007

My COMPUTER is my friend. My computer IS my friend. My computer is my FRIEND. No matter how I said it, I couldn’t convince myself. This past winter it was frozen more than Grand Forks, North Dakota. When I have a problem with my computer, my husband offers to share his until mine is fixed; but that’s like taking him off life support. He invariably gasps for air to tell me I could have bought a new computer with the money I’d spent on repairs. Computers are being made better, smaller... Read more »
