Where Is The Magic In Life?

June 13, 2008

The magician asked me to pick a card, write my name on it and shuffle it back into the deck. The next time I saw that card it was in a sealed bottle of Fiji water. If you know how he did it, don’t tell me. I like to be tricked. I like to watch magicians make things disappear. I don’t want to know how the woman disappeared from a locked trunk or how the tiger disappeared from a box suspended over the stage. Of course, my liking to be tricked might explain why I buy things like anti-wrinkle creams. Because I want to make my life magical, I buy new products that promise to remove stains,... Read more »

Charlie Chaplin - The Legend

June 13, 2008

Charlie Chaplin’s comedy was rich in creativity and cleverness. His ability to make his audience laugh while touching universal chords of emotions was a rare gift. Perhaps his childhood made him sensitive to the thoughts of other people, or maybe his sad upbringing gave him the motivation to move beyond the limits of poverty. Whatever gave him the momentum to success in the entertainment industry was a blessing that caused millions to laugh with joyful abandon. Chaplin was best known as the silent “Little Tramp” clown but his fame came over a period of years. Born in London in 1889, he lived with his divorced mother who made a meager living by sewing. She suffered a series of mental breakdowns and was institutionalized... Read more »

What Games Do People Play?

June 8, 2008

As a child, I played hopscotch. Throw a stone, hop, pick up a stone, repeat. It was a simple game that passed the time and fed my competitive nature. When I took my first cruise, I discovered adult hopscotch - shuffleboard. You play shuffleboard when your hopping days are over - when you shuffle instead of hop. The first card game I played as a child was Old Maid. Then I progressed to Go Fish and Hearts before moving on to Gin Rummy. When I learned to play Blackjack, I thought I’d made it to the big time. The first time I played Blackjack in Las Vegas I was dealt two... Read more »

Are Superstitions Based In History?

June 8, 2008

Although superstitions are passed down from generation to generation, I started a new one. I told my family that bay leaves are lucky. As soon as I said that, my sons stopped complaining about finding one in their soup. Knocking on wood is meant to be good luck because benevolent spirits were thought to live in trees and thus knocking on anything made of wood is meant to protect you from misfortune. Crossing your fingers is meant to be good luck because you make the sign of the cross and thus prevent evil spirits from harming you. However,... Read more »

Lou Costello - A Tough Act To Follow

June 7, 2008

Funny is as funny does - and Lou Costello did funny. He was part clown, part comedian and a pure professional. His desire to entertain audiences led him to hone his skills, perfecting comedic timing, character development and pacing. He left a legacy of laughter as well as an example for other comedians to follow. When Lou was on stage, his whole mind and body was engaged in entertaining. His portly frame and his face with a thousand expressions provided the physical elements to his clever words and deadpan delivery. Costello understood the psychology of laughter and tickled the funny bones of his audience with consummate skill.... Read more »

Did You Know Colors Talk?

June 7, 2008

Colors talk. Red says eye-catching and stimulating. The Chinese believe red says success but if that’s true, more schools should be painted red or more students should use the school library. It’s there to be read. Blue causes the opposite reaction of red. Blue’s peacefulness causes the body to produce calming chemicals. Fashion consultants advise wearing blue to job interviews because it says loyalty. People are more productive when they work in blue rooms. Weightlifters can lift heavier weights in blue gyms. With blue what you see is not what you get. Orange is one of... Read more »

What Could You Do Without?

June 3, 2008

There are lots of things I could do without - like more people moving to Southern California. Judging by the freeways, there are too many people now. There are too many mathematicians. Those are the drivers who take the shortest route between two points - which includes crossing from the far lane and cutting in front of me to get to an exit. The absent-minded professors are drivers who forget to use their directional signals when they change lanes, causing me to jam on my brakes to avoid hitting their - class. Then there are the old boyfriend... Read more »

The Randomness Of Funny Stuff

June 1, 2008

There are some things that are just funny whether they were intended to be or not. Like tripping over your own feet, that fall you took off of the edge of your porch, or the broken heel you got when you managed to wedge your shoe in the door to keep the elevator from closing. Now, breaking your heel to hold the elevator door may not be considered a funny thing to you, but it is to the group of people that watched you fight with your shoe for twenty minutes trying to get it unstuck. Anything funny can come from the most innocent moments. This funny... Read more »
