July 23, 2008
I was on a ward of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore recently. A junior family member had an appointment with a doctor there. I waited in the day area where patients, doctors and nurses were going about their routines. If you ever wondered why anyone would live in Baltimore, Johns Hopkins is a pretty good reason. For the 17th consecutive year, The Johns Hopkins Hospital has topped U.S.News & World Report’s annual rankings of “America’s Best Hospitals.” This year they ranked number 1 overall of all hospitals in the United States and number 1 in these specialties: Urology Gynecology Ear, nose and throat Rheumatology. July 22, 2008
We all come from a wide and diverse range of backgrounds. People have different upbringing, education, goals, belief systems and views about things around them. These individual differences are what make different people incapable of achieving similar levels of productivity. Success could be considered a relative measure; therefore, what different individuals define as success is not the same in one person as it is in the next. We all set different goals for ourselves and everyone defines success in his or her own terms. This difference in success between people is of interest because understanding how certain people achieved way beyond the average... Read more »
Answering the Question - What Do You Do?
July 22, 2008
There are questions which visionaries, artists and mystics and perhaps all human beings, for that matter, face at some point during their lifetime. How do we distill our unique and very personal understanding of what is possible for human beings into words, prose, music or other forms of communication- in ways that invite others to enjoy and perhaps find meaning from the view that we see? Being a visionary without sharing a vision feels - well -existentially unfulfilling and incomplete. Recently I was asked to provide a brief introduction to my work.... Read more »

It is just that important an ingredient for genuine success and happiness in life. But genuine connection often eludes us. We get disappointed. People let us down or we are not sure who to trust. There are a few good questions that business owners, teachers and leaders ask when they are planning for growth in their classroom, their company or their life. Who are my students or clients or friends - really? What makes them tick? And what is unique about the people I serve and regularly connect with? I have given these questions a lot of thought over the last few months. When the answer hit me it was a revelation I almost missed. I have identified one characteristic that runs through the hearts and minds of the majority of my clients. This one thing shapes their lives and our relationship. My clients, my family and many of my friends have an entrepreneurial spirit. Some would not think of themselves this... Read more »
Twelve Qualities of Spirit - Magnificence
July 21, 2008
“Promise me you will always remember: You are braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” Christopher Robin to Pooh The above quote speaks to the heart of our forgetfulness about our own Magnificence. Remembering that we are, indeed, brilliant in our own unique way takes courage and self-acknowledgment. It goes against much of our shame- based conditioning. To admit that you are a Magnificent person is seen as egotistical and grandiose. When in fact it is the truth about you and everyone else. Every year in Kona, Hawaii where I live, athletes come from around the world to complete the Ironman triathlon. The race includes a 2.4... Read more »

Accepting Change in Your Life - Ready or Not!
July 19, 2008
Sometimes the winds of change blow through my life and it seems as though everything is crumbling. When that happens here is what I usually do. TRY TO FIX IT First I try my best to run around and pick up the pieces thinking I will just put everything back in their original shape. Right! DENY IT Just like puzzle pieces that have become saturated with water and distorted, when it is time for a change, the pieces of my life do not fit together in the same way they used to. No matter how much squishing and pressing I do when there is no room there is no room. Denial only slows down the transformation process. COMPLAIN AND WORRY I may try to act calm on the surface while turmoil brews inside. I try to ignore... Read more »
Twelve Qualities of Spirit - Wisdom
July 19, 2008
“Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life.” Sandra Carey Tapping into the spiritual quality of wisdom requires different skills than the ones that give us access to knowledge. Knowledge is a wonderful thing, and I am all for sharing information that is meaningful and useful. But the development of wisdom gives us inner sustenance and fortitude - something that helps us ride through obstacles without getting stuck. Scientists now confirm that we are living within an “intelligent quantum soup.” When we tap into that... Read more »
