Cooking For Someone With A Special Diet
December 7, 2007
Cooking for someone on a special diet can be very tricky. This is because there are so many things that must be considered in the preparation of the meals. Meals prepared for diabetics would typically be prepared without any sugar and starches would be avoided as much as possible. There are many foods that a diabetic can not eat and knowing the alternatives to some of them will help keep a diabetic healthier.
Another reason for a physician to prescribe a special diet for someone could be because the person suffers from a disease of the heart. If this is the case, the physician will likely recommend alternative cooking items to cut the extra amounts of fat from the regular diet that they are on. The physician might also recommend that the foods be prepared with non-fat cooking sprays or olive oil because these items clog the arteries and also cause heart attacks to occur.
Some heart patients that are on a special diet will try to cheat sometimes. They will choose to eat foods that are fried, but will take the time to squeeze as much fat content from them with a napkin before they put the delectable morsel in their mouth. They will also want roasted foods and others that are baked, and the special diet will have these items on it because they are suitable for occasional eating but most certainly not for everyday eating.
People who are on a diet because they are trying to lose weight are also difficult to cook for. This is because they are trying to watch calories and the cook might not be aware of the calories in some items on the special diet menu. They might use a rule of thumb method to gauge the calories in food, or they might set a rule that no starches or fatty things will ever be cooked in the house where they are living.
These might sound like drastic measures but the physician was serious about the need when they placed their patient on the special diet. The doctor was certain of the dietary needs of the patient but might not have a great deal of options to improving the health of their patient. A little patience is needed with people with special diets because sometimes they have to eat the same things over and over again.
Some special diets will allow a patient to have as many vegetables and fruits as they want. As long as they stay away from the fatty foods, they can serve these fruits up any way they like. Bread will typically be one food that is off-limits to people on a diet to lose weight, but the starches in the bread can be switched with other things on the menu every now and then to make life more bearable for them.
