Fix Your Broken Skylight With A Replacement Residential Skylight
August 10, 2008
Skylight owners understand just how wonderful this natural light can be. They realize that the warmth and beauty of their home increases, and that’s not to mention the value as well. Some may even understand that these lights provide fabulous health benefits as well. If you don’t know all this we’ll tell you where to find out more later. The problem is that when these skylights leak or crack, it can be more than frustrating. The good news is that replacement residential skylights are easy to find.
For instance if your skylight should break from heavy hail or start to leak in a bad storm, your first temptation might be to just shingle over it and be done with it. But before you do this, consider your other option, that is simply replacing it. Perhaps maybe you had the wrong kind installed to begin with.
If hail storms, or golf balls or falling objects is your problem, you may just need a stronger skylight. Glass may not be the best option here, but acrylic or polycarbonate are great alternatives. Let’s talk first about acrylic. These skylights are very affordable, and you can even find them to filter out light at whatever percentage you wish. And ultraviolet light is not a problem with these either.
Polycarbonate skylights may cost a little more, but they are even stronger. How strong? Well this transparent polymer is almost unbreakable. It’s even used to make windows bulletproof. And polycarbonate is also lighter than acrylic.
But don’t forget that glass can be made stronger also. All you need to do is get a glass skylight with a protective film added. The light will be stronger, and the film will also serve to filter some of the light also. And if you get double panel glass you’ll not only be making the light even stronger, you’ll be making it a form of insulation. And that will decrease your energy usage also.
Perhaps you want a certain type of skylight. Maybe you like domed, pyramid shaped, round or tubular. These different designs make a difference in the aesthetics, but they also serve another purpose. Different skylights are made for different roof types. So if you have a peaked roof or a flat one, make sure the skylight you get is made for your roof.
And let’s not forget the importance of proper installation. So many people think they’ll save a few dollars by doing it themselves. These people find out when the first rain comes that they may have made a mistake. That’s a bad time to find out. Installing a skylight is really not that difficult, but you have even the slightest doubt about whether you can do it right, then have it professionally installed right from the start.
Make some good choices from the start and getting a replacement residential skylight is almost always a better option than calling a roofer to cover up the hole left by a broken skylight.
