Hair Loss Reasons That You Should Know

February 23, 2008

There are a number of different hair loss reasons for why a man or woman would have this particular problem. In this article, we will look at some of the more common reasons why a person can lose their hair no matter what age they are.

As mentioned before, many people have always thought that hair loss was something that only men had to deal with. Yet in fact, today it is becoming quite common for women to have to deal with this problem as well. In the United States alone around 30 million women are now trying to deal with hair loss of one kind or another.

Yet even though we have been fighting the problems of hair loss for many centuries now, you will find that many experts are still unable to decide what the main cause for this problem is. Below we will look at just some of the more common factors that can contribute towards a person losing their hair.

1. Heredity - Of all the reasons for a person to lose their hair this is the most common one. Today around half of all children who have a parent (mother or father) suffering from hair loss will then have the chances of them suffering the same condition greatly increased.

Although you may think this is something that only a man will suffer from, then you need to think again. Yes, Androgenetic Alopecia is very common in men (male pattern baldness) but it is also becoming very prevalent in women (female pattern baldness) as well. In most cases, not only can the father of the child be the carrier of the gene that can contribute to them having this condition but the mother can be as well.

2. Medical Intervention - Because we rely heavily on various forms of drugs, medications and other medical treatments to help get us well, these can actually contribute towards a person losing their hair. Certainly, people who undergo some form of chemotherapy or radiation therapy to treat cancer have a higher chance of suffering from some form of hair loss during their treatment. Normally once treatment has been completed, after a period of time, the person will often notice that they have some form of hair regrowth happening.

3. Hormone Levels - For some people the reason they have begun to lose their hair is that their hormone levels have become imbalanced. This is especially a problem that women have to deal with because their bodies are producing far more androgen hormones rather than estrogen ones, thus the excess hormones impede the new hair from growing.

Above we have looked at three of the main causes why a person is likely to suffer from hair loss. However, there are plenty of other reasons for a person to begin to lose their hair. For some it could be their age and for others it could be because they have a medical problem relating to their immune system. Whilst other hair loss reasons for women may be that they are going through menopause or they may have recently given birth to a child.
