Infidelity: What It Does To Family And Society
May 3, 2008
Infidelity, more commonly known as cheating, happens when one or both members of a marriage partnership stray. When we enter into a relationship, we expect certain behaviors, and we live within certain boundaries. When a man or woman has sex with someone else, that is infidelity.
What are the effects of infidelity on society? Infidelity has a lot of adverse effects on society. Infidelity often ends up with a divorce. A research study revealed that the cause for 90% of first time divorces was infidelity. Is it not alarming? Will it not have an effect on society?
Researchers have differing ideas about infidelity. Some say that only 20% of first time divorces were caused by infidelity, while others simply live unhappily and dissatisfied in their relationship. One study showed men to be the primary causes of infidelity, at 55%. But that figure is only slightly more than women, at 45%.
It is matter of concern to find out the effects of infidelity on society. One thing is for sure, there cannot be any good effects of infidelity on society. The worst ill effect is on the children. They undergo great stress when infidelity occurs in a family.
If a divorce does happen, children are at risk of psychological harm. They might feel insecure with their place in the world. Children thrive in a happy family, and do best with both male and female role models. Some couples choose to stay together after one of them strays simply because it may relieve the strain it would have on their children.
Divorce means children get torn between two different households, meaning they are missing out on the love of one parent and causing negative emotions. Some children become violent, acting out after the emotional devastation of a divorce. And if there are new step-parents, a child’s life becomes full of turmoil.
In some cases, especially in young girls, children seek out love elsewhere. They tend to stay in dysfunctional relationships with men who are not worthy of their affection. This only causes more problems. Similarly, many children turn to drugs and alcohol when they feel they are unloved. Even worse, divorce can cause a child to perform poorly in school, damaging their futures forever.
Infidelity shakes the foundations of family, negatively affecting society. Tearing families apart is unhealthy and can lead to disturbances in a child’s developmental growth. It also creates a weakened society. In other words, the long-term affects of infidelity can cause irrevocable damage to society.
