The Shar Pei, as a puppy, is an extremely intelligent and curious dog. They will constantly be surveying their surroundings and they will react to almost everything they come in contact with. This is fun to watch when they are pups but they also have an aggressive streak in them that can get a little out of hand if allowed to continue into adulthood. Just knowing their tendencies can help you keep track of them as they grow.
The most famous images of the Shar Pei are of when it is a little pup and it is just a ball of wrinkles that looks like it will never fit quite right into its skin. A look at the sequence of Shar Pei breeding will tell you that they grow very nicely into that wrinkled skin and they wind up becoming a strong and powerful looking adult dog.
The only wrinkles left when a Shar Pei is full grown is on its forehead and around the back of its head a little bit. Other than that they completely grow out of the wrinkles and grow into a rather impressive looking dog.
Shar Pei fur is short and stiff and can get everywhere and people seem to forget about this because of the cute wrinkles. They can shed a lot so if you are not thinking that you want to be cleaning up a lot of little dog hairs then you may want to rethink a Shar Pei.
In Shar Pei breeding there is also a concern for many health issues. The Shar Pei can develop bone ailments called hip and elbow dysplasia and these can be quite painful for the dog as well as frustrating for the owner. Your Shar Pei is also known to develop digestive problems as well that can dictate what type of diet you can feed it or if it will need medical attention its whole life.
A good breeder makes sure that new owners are not getting a dog they cannot handle and that is just one of many good reasons to deal with a reputable breeder.
A good breeder will help get your Shar Pei used to the hustle and bustle of home life before you even take it home. That is just one of the many things a good breeder will do to help you and your Shar Pei enjoy a very happy life together for many years.
