Jewelry as an Investment

December 7, 2007

People invest in all kinds of different things today. Usually these investments are for help in supporting themselves in there old age. This is very smart planning and is suggested that everyone of working age to start saving and investing for this at the earliest age possible. There are IRA’s, stocks, bonds, real estate, and many other options.

You might not think that jewelry is a great investment for your future, and the returns you may get on it could be limited, but that depends on what kind of jewelry you invest in. The gold market itself has had a tendency to fluctuate to high points and low points. It has ranged from around $800.00 dollars or more an ounce in the early 70’s all the way down to around $300.00 dollars per ounce.

It has just been recently that it has rebounded to about $700.00 an ounce. Platinum which is considerably more expensive than gold and silver which is considerably less expensive than gold, fluctuate in the same way. Since the weight of the gold, silver or platinum in a piece of jewelry can actually amount to very little, the potential to make very much money is not that great when you base it on the weight of the precious metal value alone.

With that said, what can make jewelry a decent investment? If you are going to invest a good deal of money, it is best to know what kind of jewelry is the most collectible and which will bring the most money if and when you want to sell it. Just because a piece of jewelry is old or antique does not necessarily mean it will become that much more valuable. The hallmark of a piece, in other words, the maker, can play a very important part in its current value and future value. The quality and size of the gem stones in a piece are important as well.

If the piece of jewelry was owned or worn by someone famous or if it had an outstanding history that can be proven, these are things that might make a piece of jewelry more valuable in the future. The trends of collectible jewelry go in and out and sought after items continually change. The bottom line is, unless you invest in very high quality pieces and know what you are doing, you are not likely to finance your retirement by investing in jewelry, but it is an investment that will always be worth something and you can enjoy wearing your investments at the same time.
