Poker Has Been Around For Centuries

July 3, 2008

Poker has been played for centuries. It is claimed to be the oldest game that has lasted through the ages. It has evolved and will remain for centuries more.

There are three claimed origins of poker. The Persian game of as nas, German pochspiel, and French poque are the sources most historians allege were the basis of modern day poker. Poker’s name derives from the French poque.

The origins of the game have been debated for three centuries. Even though it has been traced back to the 1700’s, no one will ever know exactly the truth. However, there is no doubt that poker is one of the most fun and exciting games around.

Poker became popular during the Revolutionary War in the United States. The game of choice for soldiers was the version of stud that used only three cards. The five-card version of stud became a useful diversion during the Civil War.

A 20-card deck was dealt to four soldiers. The lower cards, 2 through 9 were eliminated for this version. The players bet on which one of them would have the better hand.

Once the game incorporated all of the cards in a 52-card deck, popularity grew for the game, which had become more complex. With the lower cards included the possibilities became larger. This popularity brought the game to the forefront rather than just something to pass the time.

Historians also believe that poker became a gambling game in New Orleans during the 1800’s expansion. It was next found on the riverboats traveling up and down the Mississippi. Riverboats can still be found with poker as a main attraction.

It is believed that the gold miners brought poker through the west into California. As it traveled through the west, casinos and saloons picked it up as daily sport. This institutionalized poker as a “wild west” staple.

In modern days, seven-card stud is the most popular version of poker played. It has become famous by Las Vegas casinos. Tournaments and tables have been specially made for the seven-card game called Texas Hold’em.

The many different versions, which developed through the years, are still played today in many casinos and online. The only exception to this is the first version of the game. The three-carded version of stud seems to have been lost in the past.

Many things last throughout time, but poker is probably the most exciting. The longevity of the game thus far proves its durability and addictiveness. While some things may wane with time, poker will be around forever.
