Teaching your Dog to Follow Commands
August 7, 2008
Dogs are generally considered man’s best friends. It is not a surprise then to see dog owners taking much of their time teaching their pets to follow commands. However, since dog training normally involves a great deal of time, most dog owners have somehow started relying for quick and easy to follow dog training tips. Dog are very smart creatures after all but then there may be times they tend to misbehave. Therefore, if you are a dog owner, there are basically a lot of dog obedience training tips you can try to consider, whether you are still a new owner or already an experienced one.
Of the many dog obedience trainings, the potty training is considered one of the most critical ones. The most ideal thing to do is to buy a bell from your local store and then tying it on your home’s doorknob. When you take your dogs outside, be sure to have him ring that bell and then ask him “Gotta go potty? Gotta go outside?” Once the dog is already used to doing this, he understands that when he rings the bell, it means he’s gotta take a potty. However, be careful when doing this method as there may be dogs that ring the bell not because they will go potty but because they simply want to go out. When outside, accompany your dogs and mention them “go potty” so that they’ll get used to it.
Another dog training most dog owners need to understand is how to properly command ?sit?. Getting some treats and then breaking them all up into smaller pieces is ideal. Start the training by standing right in front of your dog and see to it that he/she is facing you. Say ?sit? firmly and try taking your hand and pushing him/her gently until the dog is already sitting. Once your dog successfully doe this, be sure to give him/her some treats. Have your dog get up again to repeat the process. Do this for about five to ten times per training. When laying down, you should also have dog treats with you as well. Make your dogs sit and then pull their front legs away until reaching to a laying down position and then say ??lie down?. Repeat the process as often as needed and be sure to give them treats and praise them. If you want your dog to learn how to ?shake?, have your pet dog sit and then gently grab their paw and then say ?shake?. Again, do not forget to give them treats.
Another trick, although more advanced, is ?bye-bye?. To do this, your dog should already know how to shake. Start by having your dog in a sitting position and then say ?shake? but this time, do not shake them. Instead, take their paws and wave them up and down twice and then say ?bye-bye?. Treat them with food and then praise them before repeating the trick. After a few tries, start leaving out the ?shake? and do the action with your own hand by going up and down and then saying ?bye-bye?.
