The Amazing Force Of Water
August 3, 2008
When it comes to water, we can not live without it. Then again, in some instances we can not live with it. Water is one of the most powerful forces on our planet and containing it is almost impossible and in some instances it is impossible. We can build damns, levees, and reservoirs to hold it in place for a time to be able to use it as we see fit, but even this is not a sure thing. One miscalculation and we can lose the tenuous control that we think we have over it.
Controlling this natural force is very helpful to us in many ways. It can provide us with the water supply that we need in order to conduct our daily lives. We use it as a source of enjoyment in swimming pools, and manmade lakes. Most important of all is the fact that we can have it pumped right into our homes. This is something that we take for granted almost every day. We wake up in the morning and run the water for our coffee pots and our showers without a second thought and we are not afraid.
There are other times when we least expect it that the force of water can make us very afraid. It can jeopardize our very lives when it is associated with a flurry of destruction that can be caused by Mother Nature. In the blink of en eye a hurricane can come ashore somewhere and bring with it wind and water that can flood and destroy us and anything else in its path. There is no controlling this.
Even when there are smaller floods, it can still devastate, damage, and destroy our homes and cause us to be injured or killed. There have been many instances lately where thousands of homes have been affected and many lives uprooted because of the force of water. Floods from natural disasters have cost millions upon millions of dollars in damage in our country alone and it can take years for homeowners to recover financially and emotionally.
One thing that is hard for some of us to understand is why people continue to rebuild their homes in areas that are known to be risky places for flooding? Some that have had their homes completely destroyed will choose to build again in the very same location. It might be said that since water surrounds every place on our planet, there really is no where to hide from it anyway. Maybe the best we can do is to respect it for the natural super force it is.
