What Model Railroading Clubs Can Offer You

June 20, 2008

Most hobbies have clubs associated with them ” in part because as humans we like to share and gain insight into our viewpoints as compared to others but also because shared or pooled knowledge leads to more successful ventures. After all if everyone had to recreate the wheel every time they wanted to drive we wouldnt get very far!

Model railroading is no different in this aspect. With hundred or possibly even thousands of clubs across the world model railroading is far from an obscure or fringe group of hobbyists.

Clubs like the Lionel Collectors Club of America (the LCCA) offer many resources and ways for their members to share their love of the hobby. Something that would be much more complicated without the club serving as a point to get together.

You can also find many different types of model railroading clubs - far more choices than just the number of scales. For example, a link at Railserve.com lists more than 150 different clubs from all over the world, each with their own focus and speciality.

One thing they all have in common however is a love of modeling, and the desire to share and improve the state of the hobby by sharing knowledge and information with their members. If you are serious about modeling then finding a club where you can share your findings and learn about what others have accomplished is not only a good idea, its a necessity.

Rome wasn’t built in a day after all, and certainly not by a single engineer!

Whether you’re interested in collecting classic equipment, prototyping real-world layouts or just have a general interest in anything related to model railroading, you’ll find a club that suits you.

Taking the time to join a club and connect with other members is well worth the effort. There’s nothing wrong with working by yourself, by you’ll get a lot more satisfaction by working with others who you can share your skills and knowledge with - while benefiting from theirs at the same time.
